Get ready for winter

Guest User

People in Greater Manchester are being urged to ‘get ready for winter’ by planning ahead and being prepared before they travel.

Wintry weather can make travelling difficult and disrupt journeys, but taking action now and being prepared can help keep you moving.

A special winter weather webpage has been set up including tips, expertise and useful links to keep everyone moving during the winter months.

Whether you travel by car, bike, bus, train, tram, or on foot, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) encourages you to do the following:

  • Visit TfGM.com for real time departure information for the region’s bus, train and tram services. The site also has an alert system to flag up delays affecting public transport.
  • Sign up to receive the Met Office’s weather alerts and get advance warning when bad weather is forecast.
  • Have the contact details for your transport operator to hand, and follow them on Twitter, so you know who to check with if there are problems.
  • Allow extra time for journeys, as wintry weather can affect road and rail conditions, which can make travel slower.
  • Use the TfGM Journey Planner to research in advance what alternative services or routes are available if travel plans are affected.
  • Take extra care when boarding and leaving buses, trains and trams; use the handles on the vehicle for support.

If you travel on two wheels, check the #WinterCyclingGM page for some top tips on preparing your bike.  It also includes details of free cycle training and maintenance courses over the winter.

When travelling by car, check your oil levels, tyre pressures, windscreen washers, antifreeze, and your petrol gauge before you set off on a journey – it might make all the difference later.

Lucy Kennon, who leads TfGM’s preparations for wintry weather, said: “If severe weather strikes, take extra care when you're out and about, no matter what form of transport you use.

“We will do all we can to keep people moving this winter, but it’s worth remembering that a bit of preparation now can save a lot of time and frustration later on.

“By visiting our webpage, you can find useful information such as travel tips, alternative travel options, website links and contact details, all at the push of a button or tap of a screen.”

Travellers can also sign up to receive the weekly Travel Update email subscription service covering major events and planned changes affecting roads, buses, trains and trams.
